Miami Heat Acquire Giannis in Major Trade as Bucks Initiate Rebuilding Process
Miami has secured the talents of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis from Milwaukee, trading away four players along with draft assets.
The Miami Heat have secured the services of two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Giannis Antetokounmpo and forward Bobby Portis from the Milwaukee Bucks in a significant trade that marks the conclusion of an era in Milwaukee and a revitalized championship pursuit in South Florida.
ESPN reports that the Heat are set to trade Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kasparas Jakucionis, along with three first-round draft picks, a pick swap, and a second-round pick to Milwaukee. The deal is anticipated to be officially finalized on July 6.
The trade aligns Antetokounmpo with Bam Adebayo, creating one of the league’s most powerful frontcourts for Miami as the franchise aims to reclaim its position in title contention after a playoff absence last season.
For Milwaukee, the trade signifies the exit of the player who reshaped the franchise over 13 seasons. Antetokounmpo guided the Bucks to their inaugural NBA championship in half a century in 2021 and departs as a 10-time All-Star, two-time MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, and Finals MVP.
The Bucks acquired a package focused on young talent and future resources, featuring former All-Star Herro, the promising big man Ware, Sixth Man of the Year runner-up Jaquez, and second-year guard Jakucionis, in addition to substantial draft compensation.
Milwaukee has reportedly selected Miami’s offer instead of a competing proposal from the Boston Celtics, emphasizing long-term flexibility and roster depth rather than an immediate win-now return.
Antetokounmpo’s departure comes after an extended impasse with the Bucks. Sources indicated that the 31-year-old had communicated to the organization for over a year his intention not to sign another long-term extension, believing that a fresh start would be advantageous for both parties.
Despite injuries that restricted him to a career-low 36 games last season, Antetokounmpo maintained an impressive average of 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists, while shooting 62% from the field.
Milwaukee’s 2021 championship core comes to an end with the trade, as the Bucks roster no longer includes any players from that title-winning team.
