Manchester United has acquired the majority of the land needed for their planned 100,000-capacity stadium close to Old Trafford.
Manchester United have acquired most of the land needed for their planned 100,000-seat stadium, representing a major advancement in efforts to construct Britain’s largest football venue.
The Premier League club announced on Monday the acquisition of a 25-acre site situated approximately 350 meters northwest of Old Trafford from industrial property provider Indurent and a company within the Blackstone portfolio. The land will play a crucial role in the proposed £2 billion development adjacent to the club’s historic home.
United stated that constructing the new stadium near Old Trafford would enable supporters to maintain numerous traditions and matchday rituals linked to the venue, which has served as the club’s home since 1910.
“Constructing in proximity to Old Trafford enables us to maintain the heritage, traditions, and rituals that hold significant value for our fans,” stated Collette Roche, chief executive of United’s stadium development project.
The club announced its plans for the new stadium last year, with minority owner Jim Ratcliffe expressing a preference for new construction instead of a significant redevelopment of Old Trafford. The current stadium, accommodating over 74,000 spectators, has encountered criticism recently due to infrastructure concerns, such as a leaking roof and drainage issues.
United chief executive Omar Berrada has previously cautioned that funding for the project might impact squad expenditure and competitiveness for several years. Nonetheless, the club begins the new season with optimism after achieving a third-place finish under Michael Carrick and earning a spot in the Champions League.
