Philippines: A high school shooting, believed to be an act of revenge for bullying, kills three people

Two teenagers opened fire at a school in the Philippines, resulting in the deaths of three students in an incident connected to a bullying dispute.

Three students have lost their lives and several others have sustained injuries after two teenagers opened fire at a high school in the central Philippines. Authorities suggest that this incident may have been a revenge attack connected to bullying.

Authorities reported that the suspects, aged 14 and 15, executed the shooting at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City. One suspect was apprehended shortly after the incident, while the second later turned themselves in to the authorities.

Investigators reported that the two individuals were equipped with a .38 revolver and a 9mm pistol, the latter of which is said to have belonged to a police officer relative who is currently in custody regarding the weapon’s use.

Authorities characterized the incident as a “grudge” attack, noting that initial investigations indicate the assailants entered a classroom and began firing without any prior indication.

Around 40 empty shell casings were collected from the scene. The gunfire struck three students, while four others sustained injuries while fleeing in fear, in addition to the three fatalities.

Authorities reported that they had retrieved social media content purportedly depicting one of the suspects handling and discharging a firearm, which has raised concerns regarding potential warning signs that may have been overlooked.

Police officials emphasized that they may have overlooked certain behavioral warning signs and that earlier intervention could have averted the attack.

A mother of one of the victims has demanded accountability, asserting that gun owners should be held responsible for ensuring their weapons do not fall into the hands of minors.

Officials from the city police characterized the incident as a unique school shooting in Tacloban’s recent history and called for more stringent measures regarding firearm management in households.

The education ministry conveyed significant concern regarding the attack and declared a review of school security protocols, bullying policies, and student monitoring systems.

The office of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expressed his sorrow over the incident, characterizing it as a tragedy that has led to widespread mourning.

Authorities report that gun violence in the country has generally been on the decline, with thousands of cases still documented each year across the nation; however, incidents of school shootings are infrequent.
