Breaking: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has resigned after two years in office
Keir Starmer has announced his resignation, marking the conclusion of two years in power as Labour gears up for a leadership transition.
Keir Starmer has declared his resignation as prime minister and leader of the Labour Party, marking the conclusion of his premiership only two years after guiding Labour to a significant general election victory.
In a statement delivered outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer articulated that the pivotal question confronting Labour was whether he continued to be the most suitable individual to guide the party into the forthcoming general election. He stated that he had heard the party’s response and accepted its verdict “with admirable grace.”
“Every decision I have made has been about putting the country I love first,” Starmer stated as he announced his resignation as Labour leader and prime minister.
The outgoing prime minister reflected on his political journey, describing his arrival in Downing Street in July 2024 as the most significant moment of his life. He stated that he entered politics with the aim of enhancing the lives of millions and emphasized Labor’s resurgence to power following years in opposition.
Starmer expressed his gratitude towards his family, particularly acknowledging his wife, Victoria, whom he referred to as his “rock.” He expressed his desire to dedicate more time to being “the best dad” he could be for his children.
Before announcing his resignation, Starmer defended his record as Labour leader, stating that he had inherited a party that was “politically, financially and morally bankrupt.” He highlighted reforms that he claimed restored public trust, such as addressing anti-Semitism and enhancing labor’s credibility in areas like the economy, defense, and national security.
The focus is now shifting to the successor of Starmer. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who recently secured victory in the Makerfield by-election and is set to be sworn in as an MP, is generally regarded as the leading candidate.
Senior labor figures are growing more confident in a quick leadership transition, with some predicting that Burnham may become the only candidate. If that occurs, he might assume control before or during Labor’s annual conference in September, though some supporters contend that the process should accelerate.
Starmer’s resignation signifies a pivotal moment in politics, bringing to a close a leadership that successfully led Labour back to government, yet ending much earlier than anticipated after the party’s significant electoral triumph in 2024.
