“The team needs to score, not you,” Henry yells at Ronaldo after Portugal fails to score

Thierry Henry has expressed criticism about Cristiano Ronaldo following Portugal’s draw, asserting that Ronaldo’s choice prevented Bruno Fernandes from having a scoring opportunity.

Thierry Henry has expressed criticism toward Cristiano Ronaldo’s performance during Portugal’s 1-1 World Cup draw with DR Congo, suggesting that the seasoned forward is focusing more on his individual goalscoring ambitions than the overall success of the team.

Despite taking an early lead through Joao Neves, DR Congo held Portugal to a draw in their opening Group K match. Yoane Wissa’s equalizer secured a historic point for the African side. Ronaldo, in a record sixth World Cup appearance at the age of 41, was unable to score as Portugal lost points in Houston.

After the match, former Arsenal and France striker Henry spoke on Fox Sports, emphasizing a crucial moment in the second half that involved Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes. He argued that the movement of the Portugal captain hindered the development of a better goalscoring opportunity.

“One thing that’s important, people, please at home: the team needs to score; you don’t need to score,” Henry stated.

In analyzing the passage of play, Henry remarked: “By making that run, you compel the defender to make a choice.” However, his desire to score leads him to follow in Bruno Fernandes’ footsteps.

“If he ventured into that confined space, the defender would be compelled to track him, leading to a straightforward goal for Bruno Fernandes.” However, in his pursuit of scoring, he inadvertently crosses the trajectory of the back pass, making it simpler for the defense to intercept.

Henry also noted Fernandes’ evident frustration during the play.

“And that’s my point: the team needs to score, not you.” Did you notice Bruno Fernandes’ reaction back there? It was like he was saying, ‘Let the ball roll, make the run, create space so I can just tap it in.’ It did not occur.

The criticism followed yet another disappointing performance from Ronaldo, who found it challenging to leave a significant mark against a well-organized DR Congo team. Portugal controlled the ball for much of the match but struggled to generate significant chances following their initial goal and could not secure a victory.

The draw has heightened examination of Ronaldo’s position in the Portugal team, as the seasoned striker now faces an extended goalscoring drought in significant international tournaments. Questions have arisen regarding whether Roberto Martinez ought to persist in constructing his attack around the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star.

Portugal aims to recover in their upcoming Group K match against Uzbekistan, while DR Congo approaches their encounter with Colombia energized by a result that marked the nation’s first-ever World Cup point.
