Serena and Venus Williams come together once again for their return to Wimbledon after securing a doubles wildcard

Serena Williams is set to join her sister Venus at Wimbledon, having obtained a doubles wildcard for her return to the tournament.

Tennis enthusiasts are in for a trip down memory lane as Serena Williams and her sister Venus Williams have received a doubles wildcard for this year’s championships, signaling their return to the All England Club together after a four-year hiatus.

The wildcard announcement on Tuesday introduces a captivating storyline to the tournament, as the legendary American sisters gear up to compete once more on the grass courts that have witnessed some of the most significant successes of their careers.

Serena, a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion and seven-time Wimbledon singles winner, has also secured six Wimbledon doubles titles with Venus, creating one of the most successful partnerships in tennis history.

The 44-year-old recently made her highly anticipated return to competitive tennis at the Queen’s Club Championships, where she teamed up with Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko in doubles.

However, that partnership came to an early conclusion after Mboko sustained a knee injury that sidelined her from Wimbledon.

Serena is advancing her preparations for the grass-court major, set to commence on June 29, by participating in doubles at the Berlin Open this week with Karolina Muchova.

Her latest appearance at Wimbledon was in 2022, where she participated in the tournament with a wildcard and faced a first-round loss to Harmony Tan.

Wildcards are usually awarded to players whose rankings do not qualify them for direct entry and are often set aside for prominent competitors making a comeback after injury, retirement, or long breaks from the sport.

When Serena announced her return to competitive tennis after her decision four years ago to “evolve away from tennis,” expectations swiftly rose that Wimbledon organizers would extend an invitation for her to participate in the draw.

The All England Club has granted men’s singles wildcards to Stan Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam champion anticipated to retire at the season’s conclusion, and Grigor Dimitrov, a former Wimbledon semi-finalist.

Tournament organizers currently have two men’s singles wildcard spots open for selection. Among those said to be in the running are Matteo Berrettini, who was the runner-up in 2021, along with Dan Evans, Nick Kyrgios, and Gael Monfils.

On the women’s side, French Open runner-up Maja Chwalinska was among the players granted a singles wildcard, with one spot still available before organizers reveal a second round of invitations later this week.

In the doubles draw, British players Katie Boulter and Heather Watson have been granted a wildcard entry as a team.

The anticipated return of Serena and Venus together is set to be a highlight of this year’s Wimbledon, as fans look forward to witnessing the legendary sisters grace the court once again on one of tennis’ most prestigious platforms.
