Woman Dies Following Bungee Jump Accident in Brazil
Authorities apprehended three individuals following the tragic death of a woman during a bungee jump incident from an abandoned bridge in Brazil.
A woman has tragically lost her life after falling from an abandoned bridge while participating in a rope-jumping activity in Brazil. Authorities have apprehended three individuals and initiated an inquiry into the occurrence.
The victim, Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, was participating in the activity at Ponte do Esqueleto, commonly referred to as Skeleton Bridge, in the state of São Paulo. Footage from the location captures her being led to the brink of the bridge prior to the plunge. Emergency workers subsequently confirmed her passing.
Authorities are investigating whether those involved did not adhere to safety protocols. Investigators are examining whether the men were aware that their actions posed a significant risk to the woman, ultimately resulting in her death.
A video shared online depicts three men interacting with Rodrigues de Freitas prior to her departure from the bridge. As she descended, a voice from the crowd could be heard exclaiming that her rope was not secured.
The three men donned harnesses connected to safety lines. Local officials indicated a connection to a company that organized rope-jumping activities, although some reports suggest a possible involvement with informal groups engaged in the sport.
Rodrigues de Freitas was interred shortly after the incident.
Rope jumping is distinct from bungee jumping. Participants utilize climbing ropes that convert a fall into a swinging motion, whereas bungee jumping employs an elastic cord that stretches and rebounds.
The bridge has remained neglected for years and is under federal jurisdiction. Brazil’s Secretariat of Federal Assets stated it was “available to assist the authorities in the investigations.”
The Limeira city government announced its intention to pursue legal action against the federal government regarding the condition and management of the bridge. In a statement, it indicated that it had been “implementing administrative measures and requesting action from the federal agencies responsible for the area.”
The city government stated that Rodrigues de Freitas’ death renders the ongoing omission both unsustainable and unacceptable.
Authorities are actively pursuing their inquiry.
