Gavin Newsom says the investigation by the US Justice Department into him and his wife is politically motivated
Newsom says the DOJ, led by Trump, is investigating him and his wife to intimidate and abuse them.
Gov. Gavin Newsom of California says that the US Department of Justice is looking into him and his wife in what he calls a politically driven investigation ordered by President Trump.
Newsom said in a statement on Monday that federal agents had recently called family, friends, and former employees to say they were doing a lot of work to find wrongdoing.
“They’ve been to the homes of family, friends, and former coworkers not because they know of a crime, but because they want to find one,” he said.
Besides that, he said that investigators were asking for records and abusing the grand jury process to “dig through years and years of random documents.”
According to Newsom, the investigation pertains to his political standing and potential future objectives. He claimed that because he has been a vocal critic of the president, the Trump administration was pursuing him.
He said, “He’s not after me because of mean tweets; he’s after me because I’m thinking about running for president.”
The governor also revealed that his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, is under investigation. He called this an increase in the campaign of pressure against him.
He said, “If they can’t scare me, they’ll go after the mother of our children.” “Donald Trump chose the wrong person to attack.”
Newsom claimed that he had done nothing wrong and that he would fully comply with any legal requests. He also said that the administration was targeting Trump critics politically as a whole.
The White House refused to comment on the claims and sent questions to the Justice Department, which also declined to comment. But someone who knows about the situation said that several investigations had been started in Sacramento. These included investigations into information from whistleblowers and financial issues involving Newsom’s friends and family.
Newsom’s office strongly denied the claims, saying they were false and politically motivated. They also said they would be using the Freedom of Information Act to get internal Justice Department information about him and his wife.
In his speech, Newsom compared the case to other investigations involving people he called Trump’s political opponents, saying that it shows a pattern of using government institutions as weapons.
He spoke straight to the president and said, “You can demand my records and look into me.” You can bother me and add my name to all of your lists of people you hate. If you have a grudge against me, leave my wife and family alone.
