England’s Chalobah will take the place of the injured Livramento for the World Cup

Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah has been selected for England’s World Cup squad following a calf injury that led to the withdrawal of Newcastle’s Tino Livramento.

The 23-year-old Livramento sustained the injury during training on Sunday, and a scan along with a medical assessment on Monday confirmed that he would be unable to participate in the tournament.

The world governing body FIFA permits teams to modify their final 26-man squads up to 24 hours prior to their first group match in instances of significant injury.

England made their debut against Croatia in Group L on Wednesday.

Chalobah will make his way to the team’s base camp in Kansas City, while the remainder of the squad will travel to Dallas for Wednesday’s game, as stated by England’s Football Association.

Livramento’s position had already been in doubt after he missed the final five weeks of the domestic season due to a thigh issue during a season plagued by injuries.

He made just 17 Premier League appearances for Newcastle, enduring two knee injuries that kept him out for two months, followed by a hamstring injury in January that sidelined him for 15 matches.

In November 2024, Livramento made his England debut under Gareth Southgate and has since earned five caps under Thomas Tuchel, starting twice.

He entered the game at half-time during a 1-0 warm-up victory against New Zealand but did not participate in the following friendly match against Costa Rica.

Right-back is already a concern for England, as Reece James is also facing fitness issues following an injury-plagued season. The 26-year-old missed nine games for Chelsea late in the season due to a hamstring issue.

Djed Spence and Ezri Konsa present additional possibilities. Spence, capable of playing on either side, has participated in six matches under Tuchel, whereas Konsa, primarily a center-back, has earned 11 caps, with nine of those being starts.

Chalobah has not represented England since his appearance in a friendly match against Senegal in June 2025, although he was included on the bench for multiple World Cup qualifiers during Tuchel’s tenure.

An injured player must be substituted by an individual from the “provisional release list,” which consists of up to 55 players designated before the tournament.
