Russian Airstrikes Kill 9 and Burn Down the Historic Kyiv Monastery
Russian missile and drone attacks have resulted in the deaths of 9 individuals and have caused damage to Kyiv’s UNESCO-listed Pechersk Lavra monastery.
At least 9 individuals lost their lives, and many others were injured following one of Russia’s most extensive aerial attacks on Ukraine in recent weeks. This assault resulted in a fire at a section of Kyiv’s historic Pechersk Lavra monastery and caused significant destruction throughout the nation.
The overnight barrage struck various regions, with officials confirming fatalities in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Sumy, and Russia’s Tula region as both sides persisted with long-range assaults.
The most notable destruction in Kyiv occurred at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site established in 1051 and considered one of Ukraine’s key religious and cultural landmarks. The Dormition Cathedral was engulfed in flames after officials reported a direct strike from Russian forces.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, stating, X: “A Russian strike on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra has ignited the Dormition Cathedral—a church with a history that dates back to the 11th century.” And this stands as one of the gravest offenses against Christian culture in Russia thus far.
Residents took refuge underground as flames surged above the monastery during what officials characterized as Kyiv’s most intense assault in two weeks. Drones and missiles targeted apartment buildings and inflicted damage on electricity infrastructure, temporarily leaving approximately 140,000 residents without power.
Ukraine’s military reported that Russia fired 70 missiles and deployed 611 drones overnight. Air defense systems successfully intercepted 50 missiles and 582 drones; however, officials recognized ongoing challenges in intercepting ballistic missiles.
“Ballistic missiles continue to pose a challenge for us,” Air Force spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat stated during a national television appearance. “Out of the 34 ballistic missiles launched, only 15 were intercepted, which is still a commendable outcome.”
Kyiv authorities reported that four individuals lost their lives and thirty others sustained injuries in the capital.
The assault also resulted in casualties in other locations. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported that four emergency rescuers and a municipal official lost their lives in Kharkiv due to a second strike in the area. In Sumy, three individuals, including a child, sustained injuries.
Metropolitan Epifaniy, leader of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, denounced the attack on the monastery, stating, “What more must the Kremlin Antichrist do for the world to understand that urgent measures are necessary to halt the Russian terror against Ukraine and the fundamental principles of peace?”
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that Kyiv would pursue action through UNESCO and other international mechanisms in response to the damage caused to the monastery.
The strikes occurred a day after Zelenskyy mentioned that he had conversed with US President Donald Trump regarding initiatives to conclude the war prior to the G7 summit in France. Zelenskyy has suggested direct discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, including the participation of the US and Europe; however, the Kremlin has dismissed this proposal.
Meanwhile, Russia reported that three individuals lost their lives and another three were injured, including a one-year-old child, due to a Ukrainian drone strike on the city of Tula. Ukraine announced that it had targeted two bridges connecting the Russian-annexed Crimean peninsula with territory under Russian control in an effort to disrupt supply routes.
Despite renewed diplomatic contacts, progress towards a peace agreement remains constrained as hostilities persist across both nations.
