€1.2m jewelry discovery intensifies investigation into former Spanish PM Zapatero
Spanish authorities have expanded their investigation into the former prime minister following the discovery of luxury jewelry valued at €1.2 million.
Former Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero is currently under a new criminal investigation following reports that authorities found jewelry valued at €1.2 million during a raid associated with an ongoing corruption inquiry.
The discovery has expanded legal scrutiny of the former Socialist leader, who is currently under investigation for allegations of influence peddling related to a government bailout provided to Spanish airline Plus Ultra during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Spanish media reports indicate that during a search of Zapatero’s office last month, investigators discovered necklaces, bracelets, rings, and earrings valued at around €1.2 million.
The jewelry, said to be crafted from gold and embellished with sapphires and emeralds from Zambia and Thailand, has led investigators to look into whether the former prime minister adhered to customs and tax requirements concerning the items.
Following inquiries into the appropriate payment of customs duties on the collection, authorities are currently investigating Zapatero for suspected tax fraud and smuggling.
Zapatero’s spokesman, Luis Arroyo, stated that the former prime minister would address the allegations via the judicial process.
“He will offer clarifications to the judge.”
Associates of the former leader have asserted that the jewelry is part of a family inheritance and have dismissed any allegations of misconduct.
The most recent update arises as prosecutors persist in investigating Zapatero’s purported involvement in obtaining a €53m government bailout for Plus Ultra in 2021.
Investigators are looking into allegations that the former prime minister leveraged his influence to secure the rescue package and might have gained financial advantages in exchange.
Zapatero has consistently denied any wrongdoing and has firmly rejected allegations regarding payments associated with the airline.
The bailout was a component of a government initiative designed to assist strategically significant companies impacted by the economic repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The investigation has evolved into one of the most politically sensitive corruption cases in Spain, in part due to Zapatero’s ongoing influence within the Socialist Party and his close ties with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
Sánchez’s administration, facing multiple corruption claims involving individuals associated with the ruling party, has further heightened the scrutiny.
Last month, law enforcement conducted searches at the headquarters of the Socialist Party in Madrid, confiscating documents as part of an extensive corruption investigation.
Authorities conducted searches at the residences of senior party officials and a notable businessman linked to the investigation.
Several individuals associated with the governing party, including members of Sánchez’s family, are currently facing legal proceedings, although all have denied any wrongdoing.
Zapatero is anticipated to appear before a judge later this month as investigators persist in their inquiry into both the jewelry discovery and the Plus Ultra bailout allegations.
