Twelve people were killed and nine were hurt in a shooting at the Johannesburg Settlement

A mass shooting in a Johannesburg settlement kills at least 12 people and hurts nine more.

Police in South Africa say that a mass shooting at an informal village in Johannesburg has killed at least 12 people and hurt nine others.

The attack happened late Tuesday night in the Cleveland area. It led to a large-scale police investigation and a search for the shooters who did it.

Police say that more than 10 armed suspects came near the settlement in a white Toyota Quantum. They then broke into the area through several different entrances and started shooting at people who were living there.

Police said in a statement, “The suspects are said to have entered the informal settlement through both entrances and moved through the area, firing on residents and community members in several places before leaving the scene in the same vehicle.”

Police received a report of an active shooting at approximately 11:10 p.m. local time. They then sent emergency medical teams to help the patients.

The police said eight men and three women were dead at the scene. A twelfth person later died in the hospital from injuries they got in the attack.

People who were shot nine times were taken to different hospitals to get care.

Police haven’t said why the shooting happened because their probes are still going on.

There is still a lot of serious crime in South Africa, and the country has one of the highest murder rates in the world. Gangs, organized crime, or personal grudges often cause mass shootings, particularly in slums and other unofficial areas. But officials have not said if any of this was related to the latest attack.
