EU imposes sanctions on Iranian officials and an IRGC unit due to disruptions in Hormuz

The EU has enacted sanctions against two individuals from Iran and a unit of the IRGC due to disturbances in the Strait of Hormuz.

The European Union has enacted sanctions against two Iranian individuals and a unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) due to their involvement in activities that have disrupted maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil shipping route globally.

The sanctions, announced on Monday, represent the inaugural application of the bloc’s newly established mechanism designed to safeguard freedom of navigation and address threats to international maritime transit.

In a statement, the EU announced that it had added the Hormozgan Provincial Command of the IRGC Navy to its sanctions list, along with Mohammad Akbarzadeh and Hamid Hosseini.

As stated by the bloc, Akbarzadeh holds the position of Deputy Commander for Political Affairs of the IRGC Navy, whereas Hosseini acts as a representative for Iran’s Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Products Exporters’ Union.

The measures follow Iran’s decision to close the Strait of Hormuz in response to the hostilities that erupted after U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28.

During a news conference in Cyprus, Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, characterized Iran’s actions as unacceptable and stated that member states had reached a consensus to take action against those implicated.

Iran’s actions are intolerable. In response, member states have sanctioned Iranian entities and individuals implicated in obstructing transit through the Strait of Hormuz,” Kallas stated.

She remarked that the sanctions signify the initial implementation of the EU’s new freedom of navigation regime and suggested that comparable measures might be enacted again if the situation necessitates.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital global trade route, with approximately 20 percent of the world’s oil supply traversing this narrow waterway.
