Zverev Concludes Grand Slam Drought with French Open Victory Against Cobolli
Alexander Zverev secured his inaugural Grand Slam title by overcoming Flavio Cobolli in a thrilling five-set final at the French Open.
Alexander Zverev has finally claimed the Grand Slam title that had eluded him for so long, overcoming Flavio Cobolli with a score of 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 in a gripping French Open final on Sunday, marking the first major championship of his career.
The second-seeded German triumphed over a determined challenge from Cobolli and the weight of three prior Grand Slam final losses to claim the trophy in Paris. The victory concludes years of close calls and marks Zverev as the first player, apart from Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, to secure a major singles title since 2023.
Zverev showcased his dominance from the outset, swiftly taking the first set and demonstrating resilience after Cobolli equalized the match in the second. As the contest advanced, nerves became apparent, especially during a tense fourth set where Zverev faced challenges with double faults, lost breaks of serve, and needed treatment for cramp.
Cobolli, competing in his inaugural Grand Slam final, demonstrated remarkable resilience throughout the match. The Italian bounced back after not being able to serve out the fourth set and avoided disappointment after missing an early set point in the tie-break, ultimately pushing the match to a deciding set.
However, the 24-year-old was unable to sustain the intensity in the fifth. Zverev took advantage of a string of mistakes to establish a strong 3-0 lead before finishing the match as Cobolli struggled physically.
As Cobolli unleashed a powerful shot long on Zverev’s second championship point, the German fell to the clay in a moment of celebration and overwhelming emotion, marking the conclusion of a wait that had loomed over his career.
The victory arrives during a period when the men’s game seems more accessible than it has in recent times. With Sinner exiting early and Alcaraz sidelined through injury, Zverev embraced his status as the tournament favorite and achieved the breakthrough success that many had anticipated for years.
