Christian Eriksen is awake and in stable condition following his collapse during Denmark’s friendly match against Ukraine on Sunday.
Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen is alert and undergoing medical assessment after collapsing during Denmark’s international friendly against Ukraine on Sunday, leading to the abandonment of the match.
The Danish Football Federation reported that Eriksen was alert after the incident and was under the care of doctors for monitoring.
“Christian Eriksen is conscious and is doing well under the circumstances,” the federation stated on X.
The incident took place 20 minutes into the second half, as television footage captured Eriksen grasping his chest before collapsing onto the field. Players from both teams quickly notified medical staff, while teammates and opponents created a protective circle around him as he received care.
The 34-year-old was subsequently able to exit the field and proceed to an ambulance before being transported to the hospital for further examinations.
Christian is doing well and walked off the field on his own. In my view, the pacemaker is functioning properly. He was momentarily unresponsive but soon regained consciousness, and we swiftly established contact with him,” stated Danish team doctor Morten Boesen to local media.
He will now undergo further examination in the hospital to determine the cause of the incident. We maintain regular communication with him and the medical team at the hospital. Christian is doing well, and he requested that I inform all the players that he is okay.
The collapse evoked memories of the incident during Denmark’s opening match at the 2021 European Championship, when Eriksen experienced a cardiac arrest on the field in Copenhagen. He subsequently made a comeback to professional football after receiving an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD).
Denmark captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg commended the quick actions of those near Eriksen.
Everyone responded promptly and with immense respect. I can only commend the incredible courage displayed by those who cared for Christian on the field. I can’t elaborate further, but it’s a surprise, and the key point is that Christian is doing well.
The match was abandoned with Denmark in the lead at 2-1. After the abandonment, players and staff from both teams came together on the pitch to demonstrate their support.
Denmark coach Brian Riemer emphasized that the priority continues to be Eriksen’s well-being.
“The most important thing is that Christian is doing well. He has left the field and has sent his regards to the players,” Riemer stated.
“Now it’s about us standing together, as you could see that we did on the field with admirable dignity.” It’s time to unite and make sure that everyone has support to rely on moving forward.
