Taylor Swift just made $2 billion, and all of that money came from music

Forbes’ 2026 Iconoclast 50 list came out on June 4 and included a number that changed the way people think about star money for a whole generation: Taylor Swift is worth $2 billion. That makes her the richest female musician ever, and what’s even more amazing is that she got there mostly through songs and shows.

Forbes once called her the first musician to become a billionaire through songs and performances alone, without any outside business. They broke down her wealth into three parts: a music catalog worth about $600 million, royalties and touring worth about $800 million, and a real estate portfolio worth about $110 million that includes homes in Nashville, Los Angeles, New York, and Watch Hill, Rhode Island.

It’s difficult to ignore how different she is from her friends who are billionaires. Swift passed Rihanna in wealth in 2024. Rihanna made most of her money from Fenty Beauty and Savage X Fenty. Swift’s net worth is now thought to be higher than Kim Kardashian’s, which is about $1.9 billion. Kardashian’s wealth was built through SKIMS and reality TV. Swift’s $2 billion comes from an old trick in the music business: write the songs, own the masters, and sell out arenas.

It was the Eras Tour that helped Swift double her wealth. The concert tour, which took place around the world over 16 months and brought in $2.2 billion, was the most successful music tour ever. Ticket sales, merchandise sales, and the live film all added to that total.

Reclaiming her original recordings may be the best example of Swift’s good money sense in a single deal. She bought the masters of her first six records from Scooter Braun in May 2025 for about $360 million. Braun had sold them six years prior. She paid for that buy in large part with money from the Eras Tour.

The planning for this project had already been completed years ago. Starting in 2020, Swift leveraged her fame to re-record the majority of her albums, directing the royalties directly into her own pocket and inspiring other artists to assert control over their own music.

Swift’s record “The Life of a Showgirl,” released in October 2025, reportedly sold more than four million copies in its first week, making it the biggest debut in music history. This made her worth more than $2 billion before the 2026 Forbes rankings.

To become a billionaire for the first time in October 2023, she had a net worth of $1 billion. Forbes said that she was worth $1.6 billion in August 2025. We need $2 billion by March 2026. The path, which doubles in less than three years, is remarkable by any standard.

To give you some idea, she is still not as rich as the richest living artist. With a real-time net worth of $2.8 billion, Forbes says Jay-Z is the richest person in the world. But Swift’s wealth, which she has built up almost entirely through music, is a different kind of achievement. It shows that creative ownership can grow over time, just like any other asset.
