Outcry regarding judicial shortcomings in the case of the missing girl has prompted the French government to reassess its approach to previous complaints and responses.

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has gathered leading security and justice officials in response to growing public outrage over perceived judicial failures in the case of an 11-year-old girl who went missing in southern France. Lyhanna, recognized solely by her first name, was reported missing on May 29 after departing from her middle school in the town of Fleurance in the afternoon. Her disappearance has sparked widespread concern and examination regarding the management of prior warnings about the suspect.

The man arrested in connection with the case, who is the father of one of her classmates, had previously faced multiple allegations of sexual abuse involving children, which raises concerns about missed opportunities for intervention.

Political leaders from various backgrounds, including far-right figure Jordan Bardella and Green Party leader Marine Tondelier, have highlighted this case as a demonstration of systemic failures within the justice system and a wider incapacity to effectively safeguard women and children against sexual violence.

Fleurance Mayor Gregory Bobbato expressed that the community is experiencing profound grief, emphasizing the human impact of the situation. “A family is in mourning.” “We cannot forget that,” he stated in an interview with BFM, emphasizing that the situation illustrates “a serious breakdown in state responsibility.”
