Hyundai will build an auto plant in Ghana as part of a partnership between Korea and West Africa

South Korea is increasing its investment and business partnership with Ghana, which now has a Hyundai factory.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said that Ghana will house a Hyundai plant that will make cars for the West African market as part of a new partnership agreement with South Korea.

Ablakwa wrote about the news on social media on Monday, after co-chairing the 2026 Korea-Africa Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in South Korea with Cho Hyun, the South Korean foreign minister.

The minister said that Ghana and South Korea are working together more closely by starting projects to make their economies more competitive, add value, and create jobs, especially for young people.

He said that both countries want to build a “mutually beneficial partnership” that helps each other’s economies grow and progress.

Ablakwa said that Ghana and South Korea already work together on things like healthcare, education, shipbuilding, energy, farmland, maritime issues, and building roads.

He said that both countries are making progress on several big projects, such as a new university in Ghana, a factory for making Hyundai cars, and solar-powered irrigation systems.

“This year, our two countries will open a new university in Ghana, build a Hyundai Automotive Manufacturing Plant for West Africa in Ghana, and come out with new solar irrigation systems,” he said.

The minister said that the two countries had also agreed to work together more in new areas, like energy, vital minerals, and artificial intelligence.

“On top of that, we agreed to work together on AI and form new partnerships for energy and important minerals,” he said.

Ablakwa also said that talks were going well on a visa waiver agreement between Ghana and South Korea. He said that holders of foreign and service passports were already covered while talks on the agreement as a whole continued.

Ghana and South Korea are getting ready to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic ties next year. Both countries are looking forward to working together more in strategic areas.
