China seeks a more equitable global order and advocates for reforms in UN governance
China advocates for a global governance system that includes everyone, while a UN group seeks changes to enhance multilateralism and the involvement of developing countries.
A top Chinese official called for a more democratic and open global order again while the Group of Friends of Global Governance met at the UN Headquarters in New York to discuss changes to the way the world works.
Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and former foreign minister, spoke at the meeting. He said that all the countries that were there agreed on five core principles that would strengthen and reform global government.
Wang says that member states reaffirmed their support for democratizing international relations. They stressed that all countries, no matter how big, rich, or powerful their military is, should have the same rights to choose their own growth paths and be involved in making decisions that affect the whole world.
The meeting also stressed following the goals and ideals of the UN Charter, such as respecting sovereign equality and international law and rejecting unfair treatment of other countries, one-sided pressure, and coercive actions in world affairs.
The people who took part also wanted the United Nations to play a bigger part as the foundation of the international system. They called for a renewed dedication to multilateralism and for countries to work together more effectively to solve global problems.
Wang said that members were against “power politics” and emphasized the need to protect the power of international institutions when they deal with global problems.
Reforming global governance systems to fix the differences in wealth between developed and developing countries was a big part of the talks. The group wanted to work to close the gap between the North and the South and make sure that everyone shares the benefits of growth more fairly.
The member states also said that no country should be left behind in the efforts to improve the world. This was done because developing countries are worried that some countries don’t have the same access to money, technology, and power in international organizations.
Participants also called for more action-oriented cooperation to deal with problems like economic instability, climate change, and security. They stressed that global government systems need to change to reflect the way things are now and give people real benefits.
The UN’s Group of Friends of Global Governance is a place where people can talk about how to change the way international governance works and give poor countries more power in making decisions that affect everyone.
