Trump Plans to Eliminate Whisky Tariffs Following King Charles’ Visit

Trump announces plans to eliminate whisky tariffs following a royal visit, providing relief to UK distillers and enhancing trade relations.

US President Donald Trump has announced plans to eliminate tariffs and restrictions on whisky imports after the state visit of King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

Trump stated that the decision would also remove restrictions impacting Scotland’s capacity to collaborate with the US state of Kentucky on whisky and bourbon production.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated that the decision was made “in honour of the King and Queen of the United Kingdom, who have just left the White House, soon headed back to their wonderful country.”

He remarked, “The King and Queen managed to persuade me to accomplish something that no one else could, with hardly any request!”
“It is a tremendous honor to welcome them both to the USA.”

During a subsequent press conference, Trump stated: “I have removed all the restrictions, allowing Scotland and Kentucky to begin trading once more.”

“I accomplished this in tribute to the King and Queen who have just departed.”

The UK government has confirmed that the changes will apply to all whisky tariffs, including Irish whiskey.

A representative from Buckingham Palace conveyed that the King expressed his “sincere gratitude” to Trump and noted that he “will be raising a dram to the President’s thoughtfulness.”

John Swinney, Scotland’s First Minister, expressed his enthusiasm for the announcement, describing it as “tremendous news for Scotland.”

He stated, “The Scottish economy was losing millions of pounds each month.”

The tariffs increased the cost of whisky exports to the US by 10%, making it Scotland’s largest market. There were also plans for an additional 25% charge on single malts unless an agreement was achieved.

Representatives from the industry indicated that this action would alleviate the strain on distillers.

Graeme Littlejohn, director of strategy at the Scotch Whisky Association, stated: “The industry has been experiencing a loss of approximately £4m per week in exports to the United States – totaling £150m over the past year while tariffs have been enforced,”

“This is a significant advantage for the industry, and distillers will feel a sense of relief now that these tariffs have been lifted.”

“The extensive negotiations that have taken place over several months, involving high-level discussions, are truly what made this possible.”

He remarked, “Perhaps the state visit has served as the catalyst for finalizing this, and the King’s presence has added that touch of royal charm to ensure the deal succeeds.”

Secretary of State for Business and Trade in the UK Peter Kyle stated: “This is excellent news for our scotch whisky industry, valued at nearly £1bn in exports and providing support for thousands of jobs throughout the UK.”
