Parker Leaves Burnley Following Relegation As Club Aims to Rebuild for Championship Comeback

Scott Parker departs from Burnley by mutual agreement after the team’s relegation, with Mike Jackson poised to manage the last four matches.

Burnley FC has mutually agreed to part ways with head coach Scott Parker, just eight days following the confirmation of their relegation from the Premier League.

The Clarets’ relegation was confirmed with a 1-0 loss to Manchester City on 22 April, concluding a challenging season in which they secured only four victories out of 34 league matches and managed to earn just one point from their final eight games.

Mike Jackson, the assistant manager, will assume interim responsibility for Burnley’s last four matches, starting with the upcoming trip to Leeds United on Friday.

Burnley faced challenges that went beyond the league, experiencing early departures in both domestic cup competitions. They faced elimination from the FA Cup at the hands of Mansfield Town and from the Carabao Cup against Cardiff City, both teams hailing from lower divisions.

Parker, who was appointed in July 2024 on a three-year deal, successfully led Burnley back to the Premier League at the first attempt, finishing in second place in the Championship. His team achieved an impressive milestone with 30 clean sheets throughout that promotion-winning season.

“Leading this great club has been an immense privilege,” Parker remarked, looking back on his time in charge. “I take pride in our accomplishments, particularly during our promotion season, but now is the appropriate moment to pursue a new path.”

Although the season began with promise, Burnley’s performance declined significantly, culminating in a seven-game losing streak that plunged them into the relegation zone. Despite demonstrating resilience in draws against prominent teams like Manchester United and Liverpool FC, significant losses and disappointing outcomes against relegation contenders heightened the pressure on Parker.

Club chairman Alan Pace had expressed his support for the manager earlier in the season, even going so far as to criticize the protesting supporters. Burnley’s defensive issues, having conceded 68 goals—the highest in the league—ultimately had detrimental consequences.

Parker took over from Vincent Kompany before the 2024–25 season and quickly found success, even with the loss of important players. His departure signifies the conclusion of a tumultuous yet significant period at Turf Moor as Burnley readies itself for a return to the Championship.
