The disciplinary rules for the 2026 World Cup are set to undergo significant changes

Football regulations are poised for significant changes as FIFA gears up for important disciplinary reforms ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

The Athletic reports that this reform will be on the agenda at the governing body’s council meeting in Vancouver, where it is anticipated to receive approval.

The proposal suggests implementing two phases for clearing yellow cards throughout the tournament, aiming to avoid the excessive accumulation of cautions that could unfairly penalize players in a competition that has been expanded to 48 teams.

Yellow cards that do not lead to a suspension will be cleared once at the conclusion of the group stage and again following the quarterfinals.

The objective outlined is to reduce suspensions during knockout matches in a World Cup that will now feature an extra round with the round of 16.

This measure aims to maintain squad depth during critical moments and fulfill the expectations of coaching staffs. This is likely to be positive news for national team coaches.
