King Charles’ US visit will continue as planned, despite the recent shooting scare at the White House

King Charles III will continue with his state visit to the United States, undeterred by a recent security incident near the White House.

Buckingham Palace has confirmed that King Charles III’s scheduled state visit to the United States will proceed on Monday, despite a recent security incident near the White House. Following consultations between British and US officials, the announcement comes in the wake of a shooting that interrupted a high-profile dinner attended by Donald Trump over the weekend.

On Saturday, during a White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, a gunman opened fire, leading security agents to quickly escort the president to safety. According to acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, US authorities suspect that the attack could have targeted the president and senior administration officials. Officials have indicated that there are no signs of additional threats.

In light of security concerns, President Trump conveyed assurance regarding the safety measures, emphasizing that the White House grounds are exceptionally secure. He also provided assurance that there were no extra risks for visiting dignitaries, including the British monarch.

King Charles and Queen Camilla are anticipated to arrive for a four-day state visit focused on enhancing the relationship between the two nations. The visit will feature a private meeting with President Trump and an address to Congress commemorating 250 years since US independence, set against the backdrop of ongoing diplomatic tensions related to the Iran conflict.

Buckingham Palace stated that the decision to move forward came after thorough discussions across the Atlantic and in consultation with government advice. A spokesperson for the palace stated that the King and Queen are eager for the visit and appreciate the efforts of officials who have made it possible to proceed safely.

Sources have indicated that some engagements may undergo minor adjustments while also confirming that the monarch has been kept fully informed of developments. King Charles and Queen Camilla have privately contacted President Trump and Melania Trump to convey their concerns following the incident.

In the meantime, UK minister Darren Jones stated that the British government will maintain close collaboration with US security agencies to guarantee the success and safety of the visit, with further discussions anticipated in the coming days.

Jones informed Sky News, “Regarding His Majesty’s upcoming visit to the United States next week … our security services are clearly maintaining close cooperation in preparation for that.”
