Former Nigeria forward Eneramo passes away during a friendly match

Michael Eneramo, a former forward for Nigeria, passed away on Friday after collapsing on the pitch during a friendly match, as announced by the Nigeria Football Federation.

The 40-year-old “seemed to have experienced cardiac arrest five minutes into the second half” of the game in Kaduna, according to the NFF, referencing initial reports.

Eneramo, having had successful tenures with clubs in Turkey and Tunisia, earned 10 caps for the Super Eagles. He made his debut for Nigeria in a friendly match against Jamaica in 2009. “This news is devastating.” “I find myself at a loss for words at this moment,” stated NFF general secretary Mohammed Sanusi. “I can only hope that God will bestow upon him eternal rest and also provide his loved ones and the Nigerian football family with the strength to endure this loss.”

Fans of Tunisian club Esperance Sportive de Tunis affectionately referred to Eneramo as “the Tank” due to his formidable physical presence and assured style of play, which contributed to the club’s success in securing silverware, as noted by the NFF.
