Fernandes of Portugal aspires to secure a World Cup victory to honor Ronaldo’s illustrious career

Bruno Fernandes, the Portugal midfielder, conveyed his aspiration that he and his fellow teammates can honor Cristiano Ronaldo’s international career by securing victory in the 2026 World Cup.

The 41-year-old Ronaldo is poised to make his record sixth World Cup appearance in June, a tournament anticipated to mark the concluding significant chapter of the forward’s career. “Concluding this last World Cup with Cristiano (Ronaldo) winning it would be something extraordinary,” Fernandes shared with Wayne Rooney in a BBC report released on Friday. “I truly hope we can achieve this goal, not only for Portugal but for everything Cristiano has contributed to football and the world,” the Portuguese midfielder and Manchester United captain expressed.

Ronaldo, regarded as one of the greatest players to have never won a World Cup, holds the record for the most goals in international football, totaling 143.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner contributed to Portugal’s triumph in Euro 2016 and has secured the Nations League title on two occasions.

Portugal’s first match in Group K is scheduled for June 17 against the Democratic Republic of Congo, followed by a game against Uzbekistan on June 23, with both matches taking place in Houston. On June 27, they will face Colombia in Miami for their final group match.

The World Cup is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19 across Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
