Lesotho Increases Water Exports to South Africa with Historic Senqu Bridge
The imminent completion of the landmark Senqu Bridge positions Lesotho to enhance its water exports to South Africa.
The water supply in Johannesburg remains significantly reliant on imports from neighboring Lesotho, with approximately 60 percent of the city’s water coming from the mountain kingdom. Officials indicate that this dependence is anticipated to grow as Lesotho aims to enhance its export capabilities via new infrastructure developments, including the Senqu Bridge, which will facilitate increased water flow to meet the rising demand in Johannesburg.
The Senqu Bridge, measuring 825 metersmeters in length and standing 90 metersmeters tall, is a crucial element of the expansion under the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. The project presently provides approximately 780 million cubic meters of water each year to South Africa, with forecasts suggesting that this volume will increase to more than 1.27 billion cubic meters annually upon completion.
In discussing the development, King Letsie III emphasized the dual importance of the initiative, pointing out that Lesotho is dedicated to bolstering South Africa’s water security while also utilizing the project to further its own economic growth and energy goals. He stressed the importance of a renewed focus on long-term planning, discipline, and integrity in national development efforts.
In addition to its economic significance, the bridge stands as a remarkable feat of engineering. The Senqu Bridge, valued at $144 million, stands as Lesotho’s inaugural extradosed structure—an innovative hybrid design that combines cable-stayed and prestressed girder systems. Engineers utilized an incremental launching construction method, a technique that improves worker safety while reducing environmental disruption.
As the project advances, the increased water transfer capacity is anticipated to enhance regional collaboration while solidifying Lesotho’s position as a vital supplier in Southern Africa’s water network.
