Leicester City has been relegated to the English third tier following a draw with Hull, marking their second consecutive demotion
Leicester City has been relegated to the third tier of English football, a mere 10 years following their historic Premier League title victory.
Leicester experienced a consecutive relegation, while Coventry achieved promotion as Championship champions with a commanding victory.
On Tuesday, Leicester City faced relegation to the third tier of English football after a 2-2 draw at home against Hull City, marking a second consecutive demotion just a decade after their remarkable Premier League title victory.
The outcome positioned Leicester in 23rd place with 42 points from 44 matches, leaving them seven points adrift of safety and with only two games left, rendering survival mathematically unfeasible. Hull, in pursuit of promotion, rallied back from behind on two occasions to earn a vital point at the King Power Stadium.
In the 18th minute, Leicester found themselves trailing as Liam Miller took advantage of an error made by goalkeeper Asmir Begovic. The hosts momentarily reignited optimism in the second half when Jordan James converted a penalty in the 52nd minute, followed by Luke Thomas giving them the lead just two minutes later. In the 63rd minute, Hull made their mark with a goal from Oli McBurnie.
The relegation signifies a significant downturn for Leicester, who astonished the football world in 2015-16 by clinching the Premier League title as 5,000-1 underdogs under the guidance of manager Claudio Ranieri. The club secured the FA Cup in 2021.
Leicester’s challenges intensified this season following a six-point deduction due to violations of the English Football League’s profitability and sustainability regulations. They experienced recent losses to Swansea City and Portsmouth prior to Tuesday’s draw, which confirmed their relegation.
