Amazon Plans Investment of Up to $25 Billion in Anthropic as AI Collaboration Expands

On Monday, Amazon revealed plans to invest as much as $25 billion in the artificial intelligence startup Anthropic, marking a substantial enhancement of their strategic partnership amid the growing competition in the global AI landscape.
The agreement encompasses an upfront investment of $5 billion, along with a further $20 billion dependent on achieving designated commercial milestones. The recent funding enhances the $8 billion that Amazon has previously pledged to Anthropic.
In exchange, Anthropic has committed to investing over $100 billion in Amazon’s cloud infrastructure over the next ten years, highlighting the tech giant’s pivotal role as a supplier of computing power for sophisticated AI systems.
The agreement aims to secure substantial computing resources for Anthropic, the creator of the Claude AI models, as it expands to compete with its rivals. The company announced its intention to deploy approximately one gigawatt of capacity utilizing Amazon’s Trainium2 and Trainium3 chips by year-end, aiming for a long-term target of achieving up to five gigawatts.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy stated that Anthropic’s use of the company’s custom-designed chips underscores the advancements in their partnership focused on specialized AI hardware.
Although Amazon has encountered difficulties in creating enthusiasm for its AI models, like Nova, it continues to be a leading player in cloud computing, which is essential to the AI sector. The company announced its expectation to allocate approximately $200 billion towards capital expenditures this year, primarily aimed at AI development.
Amazon’s investment in Anthropic is a strategic move to position itself alongside top AI developers. Earlier this year, the company announced plans to invest as much as $50 billion in OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT.
