Violence among fans results in the cancellation of the Paraguayan league match between Olimpia and Cerro Porteno

Local police reported that violent clashes between fans and police led to the cancellation of Sunday’s Paraguayan league match between Olimpia and Cerro Porteno in the capital, Asunción.

Authorities indicated that the violence was “perpetrated by a section of Cerro Porteno supporters,” leading to the temporary suspension of the match for security reasons.

“In light of these occurrences, police officers promptly took action to reestablish order and ensure the safety of all attendees,” the statement indicated.

Authorities stated that an investigation is currently in progress to identify those accountable.

“The offenders will be referred to the Public Prosecutor’s office to face appropriate penalties and will be prohibited from attending sporting events,” police stated.

Olimpia, Cerro Porteno, and the Paraguayan Football Association (APF) have not yet provided a response to requests for comment made outside of business hours.
