Eight children lost their lives in a domestic shooting in Louisiana, while the suspect died during a police chase as authorities look into the motive and circumstances surrounding the incident.

On Sunday in Shreveport, Louisiana, a gunman took the lives of 8 children in a tragic domestic violence incident, after which police fatally shot him during a vehicle chase, according to authorities.

Seven bodies were discovered within the residence where the shooting took place, and an eighth child perished while trying to escape via the roof, as reported by Shreveport Police Department spokesperson Christopher Bordelon. He described the crime scene to local media as “incredibly gruesome.”

According to preliminary information, the suspect initially shot a woman before proceeding to a nearby residence where he took the lives of the children, as stated by police in a Facebook post. The ages of the children varied from approximately 1 to 14 years old.

According to the post, two women were receiving treatment at a hospital for serious injuries.

Bordelon informed local media that the suspect and one of the injured women were the parents of seven of the children. One woman suffered severe injuries, and several families were impacted. The shooting commenced shortly after 6 a.m. on Sunday.

According to Leigh Anne Evensky, the director of communications for the mayor’s office, authorities have identified the suspect as Shamar Elkins.

The suspect is accused of carjacking a vehicle following the shootings and was fatally shot by police during a pursuit into neighboring Bossier Parish. The Louisiana State Police have initiated an investigation regarding the shooting of the suspect.

“This is a deeply unfortunate situation, perhaps the most severe we’ve ever encountered,” stated Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux.

The mayor announced that initiatives are in progress to create a thorough domestic violence center in collaboration with the Caddo Parish sheriff.

During a news conference, Louisiana state Senator Sam Jenkins emphasized that the incident underscores the necessity for more robust intervention measures.

“If we have someone with a history of domestic violence, let’s ensure that those resources and interventions are available continuously and consistently, in hopes of preventing what we’ve witnessed here today,” Jenkins stated.

Officials have stated that the motive is still unknown as the investigations proceed.

US House Speaker Mike Johnson referred to the incident as a “heartbreaking tragedy,” while Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry expressed that he and his wife were “praying for everyone affected.”

The Gun Violence Archive reports that there have been at least 119 mass shootings in the United States this year, leading to 117 fatalities, which include 79 children, and leaving 458 individuals injured.
