Algeria initiates an oil and gas licensing round to enhance production

Algeria, a gas-rich member of OPEC, initiated a 2026 oil and gas licensing round on Sunday, presenting seven exploration blocks to enhance output and draw foreign investment, according to the government.

The “Algeria Bid Round 2026” was unveiled during a ceremony that saw the participation of representatives from international energy companies in Algiers.

The offered blocks are in Ouargla, Illizi, Touggourt, and El Bayadh, featuring a combination of oil and gas prospects that officials estimate to hold hundreds of millions of barrels of oil along with substantial volumes of natural gas.

The technical phase of the bidding process is set to commence on June 1, providing access to tender documents and online presentations. This will be followed by data sessions and clarifications, continuing until October 31.

Bid submissions are due on November 26, and hydrocarbon contracts with the state-owned Algerian energy company Sonatrach are set to be signed on January 31 next year, under production-sharing or participation agreements, depending on the block.

Algeria has been actively enhancing its upstream sector to maintain its position in global energy markets.

“The upcoming bidding round will enhance global energy security and bolster Algeria’s position as a regional energy hub,” stated Hydrocarbons Minister Mohamed Arkab.
