Former Austria goalkeeper Manninger passes away in a road accident at the age of 48

Alex Manninger, the former Austria goalkeeper known for his time at Arsenal and various Italian clubs, tragically passed away in a road accident on Thursday at the age of 48, according to the Austrian Football Association (OEFB).

Reports from the Kronen Zeitung and other media indicate that Manninger’s vehicle was struck by a passenger train at an unrestricted crossing close to the Austrian city of Salzburg.

Manninger made 33 appearances for Austria and played for Arsenal, primarily as a reserve, from 1997 to 2001. He concluded his career at Liverpool during the 2016-17 season.

In Italy, he played for Fiorentina, Torino, Bologna, Siena, Udinese, and Juventus. “Alexander Manninger was an exceptional ambassador of Austrian football both on and off the pitch,” stated OEFB Sporting Director Peter Schoettel in a statement. “Through his international career, he has established standards and inspired many young goalkeepers.” His professionalism, calm demeanor, and dependability established him as a vital member of both his teams and the national team.
