China says that US claims of military pressure on Taiwan are “distorted”
China rejects US military pressure on Taiwan, labeling it as distorted and politically motivated interference in its internal matters.
China has firmly condemned the United States regarding allegations of heightened military pressure on Taiwan, characterizing these claims as misleading and driven by political motives.
During a speech in Beijing on Wednesday, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, stated that some individuals in Washington were amplifying the so-called “mainland threat” narrative, accusing them of intentionally misrepresenting facts for ulterior motives.
He emphasized that Taiwan is an internal issue for China and cautioned that Beijing would not accept any kind of foreign interference in its matters.
Chen urged the United States to exercise caution in addressing Taiwan-related matters, advocating for a more measured and responsible approach.
The comments arise during a period of increased tensions in the area, as China persists in escalating military operations near Taiwan, featuring a sequence of war games and live-fire exercises carried out in recent months.
Beijing has persistently opposed US arms sales to Taiwan, even though Washington remains the island’s most prominent international supporter.
The US State Department has urged China to lessen military pressure and initiate dialogue with Taiwan, in light of a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Taiwanese opposition leader Cheng Li-wun in Beijing.
Nonetheless, China continues to reject any engagement with Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te, whom it categorizes as a separatist. Lai has consistently dismissed Beijing’s sovereignty assertions, affirming that it is solely the people of Taiwan who possess the authority to shape their own future.
China persists in promoting what it terms “peaceful reunification,” yet it has not dismissed the possibility of employing force, highlighting the strategic and economic advantages it anticipates from such reunification.
