US Congressman Swalwell Announces Stepping Down in Light of Sexual Misconduct Allegations
Eric Swalwell has stepped down from his position in the US Congress in light of misconduct allegations as investigations intensify and political pressure escalates regarding the ethics inquiry.
US Congressman Eric Swalwell has declared his intention to resign from Congress amid increasing pressure due to sexual misconduct allegations, signaling a significant shift in his political journey.
Swalwell, a Democrat who has represented a district near San Francisco since 2012, announced his decision in a letter shared on X, where he expressed regret for what he called “mistakes in judgment” while strongly refuting the most serious allegations made against him.
“I sincerely apologize to my family, staff, and constituents for the errors in judgment I have made in the past,” he wrote. “I will vigorously contest the serious, unfounded accusation directed at me. Nonetheless, I must acknowledge and accept responsibility for the errors I have made.
The resignation comes in the wake of a series of allegations made last week by four women, who accused the lawmaker of misconduct that includes sexual harassment and rape. The allegations led to swift political repercussions, resulting in the forfeiture of crucial endorsements for his campaign for governor in California and the departure of multiple staff members.
The controversy led to several investigations being initiated. Prosecutors in Manhattan have confirmed the initiation of a probe into Swalwell’s conduct, while the House Ethics Committee has also commenced its own inquiry as Congress gets ready to reconvene.
Swalwell had already stepped back from the California governor’s race amid the growing crisis, where he had been viewed as one of the top Democratic candidates in a competitive field leading up to the state’s primary elections.
In his resignation letter, he contended that expulsion by Congress without due process would be unfair yet recognized that the controversy had turned into a distraction from his legislative duties.
“It would be unjust for my colleagues to remove me without proper procedure, just days after an allegation has surfaced,” he stated. “However, it is also inappropriate for my constituents to have me diverted from my responsibilities. Consequently, I intend to step down from my position in Congress.
He mentioned that he would collaborate with his staff in the upcoming days to guarantee uninterrupted service for constituents in his district, which covers regions east of San Francisco and north of San Jose.
Another lawmaker, Tony Gonzales, a Republican from Texas, has also become involved in the situation, as he is currently facing a separate ethics inquiry. Gonzales declared his intention to retire from office after acknowledging an affair with a staff member.
In a post on X, Gonzales stated, “There is a season for everything, and God has a plan for us all.” Upon Congress’s return tomorrow, I will submit my retirement from office. Serving the wonderful people of Texas has been a true honor.
The recent developments arise as lawmakers from both parties have started to deliberate on the potential expulsion of the two congressmen, heightening the political pressure related to the ethics investigations.
Even after announcing his resignation, Swalwell’s name will still appear on the ballot for California’s upcoming gubernatorial primary, as election officials have confirmed that it is too late to remove candidates at this point.
California’s open primary system enables voters to select candidates without regard to party affiliation, allowing the top two candidates to progress to the general election. The lack of a definitive Democratic frontrunner after Swalwell’s departure has sparked worries within the party regarding vote splitting, which could enable Republican candidates to take control of the primary results.
