Ghana Appoints Queiroz As Head Coach Ahead Of World Cup
Ghana has enlisted the expertise of seasoned coach Carlos Queiroz following recent challenges, with the goal of rejuvenating their prospects ahead of the important World Cup campaign.
The 73-year-old Portuguese takes over from Otto Addo, who was dismissed on 31 March after friendly losses to Germany and Austria. Ghana, referred to as the Black Stars, also did not qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations under Addo.
Queiroz held the position of assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford during two periods, from 2002 to 2003 and again from 2004 to 2008, with a tenure as head coach of Real Madrid in between.
He recently managed Oman but departed from the position last month after they did not qualify for the World Cup.
“I embrace this mission with the same fervor and dedication that have steered me throughout my career,” Queiroz stated.
“Ghana is a country rich in talent, filled with pride, and embodies the spirit of football.” I come with admiration for its past and confidence in its future.
Queiroz, born in Mozambique, guided Portugal to the last 16 at the 2010 World Cup and has managed Iran in three consecutive editions of the tournament. He has held coaching positions with Egypt, Japan, Colombia, and South Africa and previously managed Portugal in the early 1990s.
Ghana is set to commence their World Cup journey in Group L with a match against Panama on 17 June, followed by a clash with England on 23 June and a game against Croatia on 27 June. The tournament will be jointly hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
