Tragically, an attack on the Berekum Chelsea team bus killed Frimpong, a Ghanaian player

Berekum Chelsea winger Dominic Frimpong was tragically killed during an armed robbery on his team’s bus while returning from an away match in the Ghana Premier League on Sunday, according to the country’s football association (GFA).

The incident took place on the Goaso–Bibiani road while the team was returning home from their match against Samartex in Samreboi, located in the southern part of the country. While returning to Berekum from Samreboi, our team bus was ambushed by a group of armed robbers who obstructed the road to halt our journey,” the club stated in a release on Monday. Masked individuals armed with guns and assault rifles began firing at our bus while the driver attempted to reverse. The players and staff sought refuge in the nearby bushes for protection.

The Ghanaian FA later announced that 20-year-old Frimpong had passed away in the incident. The GFA has expressed its profound shock and deep sorrow at the tragic news of the passing of Dominic Frimpong from Berekum Chelsea Football Club,” they stated in a release. This heartbreaking event represents a significant loss not just for Berekum Chelsea but for Ghanaian football in its entirety. Dominic was a talented young player whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league.

It stated that it would enhance security measures for clubs participating in domestic competitions, particularly in light of recent incidents that have raised concerns about player and fan safety.

In a similar incident in 2023, an assailant attacked the Legon Cities team bus after a match at Samartex, but no injuries were reported.
