Floyd Mayweather Faces $7.3 Million IRS Bill

Boxing star encounters a new tax lien while preparing for a comeback in 2026, alongside a significant lawsuit.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is encountering significant financial and legal challenges as he readies himself for a prominent comeback in the ring.

The IRS has recently imposed a $7.3 million tax lien on the boxing legend in Las Vegas, attributing it to unpaid taxes from the years 2018 and 2023. The federal government can now assert a claim on Mayweather’s property as collateral until the substantial balance is resolved. Mayweather has notably faced tax challenges previously, such as a $22.2 million settlement in 2015, and this recent lien arises as multiple significant legal disputes intensify.

The situation is further complicated by Mayweather’s own $340 million lawsuit against Showtime. Filed in February, the lawsuit alleges that a significant portion of his career earnings was “misappropriated” through a fraudulent scheme. Mayweather claims that rather than sending fight revenues directly to him, the funds were transferred to third-party accounts, resulting in the money becoming “missing and unaccounted for.” Although Showtime refutes these allegations, the situation underscores the substantial amounts of money presently entangled in legal disputes.

The retired champion is facing a series of challenges this year, including tax debt and network disputes. AJ’s Jewelry in Miami has initiated a lawsuit, asserting that Mayweather left with more than $1.3 million worth of luxury watches and chains without settling the complete bill, claiming that multiple checks he issued subsequently bounced. This is in addition to a separate federal case in which another jeweler is pursuing $4 million. His living arrangements have come under scrutiny, with legal claims suggesting he owes more than $330,000 in unpaid rent for a Manhattan penthouse.

The recent push for Mayweather to return to the ring for high-stakes paydays seems to stem from these drawbacks. Nonetheless, those plans are becoming increasingly complex. The team representing Manny Pacquiao has recently alleged that Mayweather is in violation of the contract concerning their planned rematch in September. It is alleged that he has already accepted a substantial cash advance for the fight, yet he has since attempted to shift the event from a professional match to a low-stakes exhibition.

In spite of the increasing number of lawsuits and liens, Mayweather persists in sharing images on social media featuring large sums of cash. His legal team asserts that he is not “experiencing financial strain,” yet the series of court documents indicates that the fighter is urgently trying to secure his next significant payday to address the mounting debts he faces.
