Iran is awaiting FIFA’s response before finalizing its participation in the World Cup
Iranian government has stated that it will make a decision regarding the national team’s participation in the forthcoming FIFA World Cup after obtaining feedback from FIFA about a suggested change of match venues.
The Iranian Football Federation (FFIRI) has officially asked for the relocation of the team’s group-stage matches from the United States to Mexico, referencing security issues associated with U.S. military actions in conjunction with Israel amid the current regional conflict.
Last month, the federation confirmed that discussions had commenced with FIFA regarding the potential relocation.
In the meantime, Iran’s sports ministry has imposed restrictions on national and club teams, prohibiting travel to countries deemed hostile until further notice.
In light of these concerns, FIFA president Gianni Infantino recently stated that Iran’s fixtures would continue as scheduled.
Nonetheless, Iran’s Minister of Sport, Ahmad Donyamali, maintains that discussions are still in progress.
“Our request to FIFA to move Iran’s games from the U.S. to Mexico remains in effect, but we have not yet received a reply,” Donyamali stated in an interview with Anadolu Agency.
“If accepted, Iran’s participation in the World Cup will be assured.”
“Nonetheless, FIFA has yet to provide a response.”
“In my capacity as the minister of sports, I, along with the Iranian football federation, will ensure that the football team is fully prepared for the World Cup.”
Nonetheless, the ultimate choice will rest with our government.
Iran is currently set to play all their Group G matches in the United States, taking on New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles, before wrapping up their group campaign against Egypt in Seattle.
U.S. President Donald Trump previously indicated that Iran’s team would be permitted to compete in the country, although he expressed concerns regarding the appropriateness of their “life and safety.”
He subsequently clarified that any possible risks would not stem from the United States.
Donyamali emphasized the significance of security assurances from host nations.
“He stated that, in accordance with FIFA’s relevant regulations, security must be ensured in the country in question.”
“Nonetheless, the World Cup is approaching, and offering guarantees during this time raises concerns.”
“Given the current situation, it is highly unlikely that Iran will take part in the World Cup matches in the U.S.”
“However, should the necessary security guarantees be offered, our government will determine Iran’s involvement in the World Cup.”
FIFA has not provided an official response to the request at this time.
The United States, Mexico, and Canada are set to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will take place from June 11 to July 19.
