DJ Association Takes Down Burna Boy’s Tracks From Playlists Following Dispute With DJ Tunez
The Nigerian DJ Association has taken the step of removing Burna Boy’s music from their playlists after an incident involving DJ Tunez at a Lagos event.
The Nigerian DJ Association (NDJ) has declared the removal of Burna Boy’s tracks from its DJs’ playlists after an incident between the artist and DJ Tunez at a Lagos event.
On Monday, an incident took place at Obi’s House, a well-known weekly Afrobeats gathering in Lagos. Burna Boy and DJ Tunez’s disagreement escalated into a physical confrontation, which bystanders eventually brought under control.
Shortly after the incident, DJ Tunez took to X to express his thoughts, stating, “OGBAFIA NUMBER 1 DON WAKE OOO!” He continued with, “THIS N**** BURNA BOY! ALL SIGNS OF WEAKNESS!” and added, “FIRST OFF…. YOU HIT ME IN THE BACK OF MY HEAD WITHOUT ME LOOKING! THAT’S SOME S*** S*** MY BOY!” The posts were subsequently removed.
The NDJ released a statement on Instagram regarding the situation, reaffirming its commitment to equality and respect within the DJ community. The statement read: “Dear NDJ…No one is born with hatred towards another due to their skin color, religion, background, or gender. Individuals can develop a capacity for hatred, and if they can cultivate such feelings, they can equally be guided towards love, as love is more inherent to the human heart than its contrary.
“At NigerianDJ, we prioritize our DJs, firmly believing that ‘ALL DJs are EQUAL.'” We provide a transparent and personalized service to assist our DJs and clients in reaching their goals and aspirations, both at home and abroad.”
“Where, ultimately, do universal human rights originate?” These are the spaces where every male and female #NDJ strives for equal justice, equal opportunity, and equal dignity without discrimination, regardless of the source, whether from a fellow NDJ or a NON-NDJ. Unless these rights hold significance in that context, they hold little meaning anywhere else. Without focusing on our #NDJ actions to support them locally, we will search in vain for advancement in the broader landscape of DJing in Nigeria as a whole.
“However, we urge all communities #NDJ to embrace tolerance and reject prejudice based on caste, creed, sect, religion, or gender.” We strive to ensure freedom and equality for all DJs nationwide, allowing them to flourish. Success is unattainable for everyone if some individuals are being impeded.
“The Nigerian DJ stands firmly against the discrimination of any of its #NDJ.”
The association has announced its decision, stating, “Burna Boy Music is temporarily removed from any of our Dus playlists until further notice. Our team will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident that occurred last night involving one of our own, DJ Tunez.” We encourage DJs across Nigeria to remain attentive and show respect to every individual artist, regardless of gender, at their events. Honor the DJs. The connection between DJs is incredibly powerful.
The reason behind the disagreement has yet to be officially verified, although social media reactions have hinted at potential tensions within the industry, particularly regarding differing opinions on artistic direction and collaboration practices among DJs. As of the time of this report, Burna Boy has not made any public comments regarding the incident.
