U.S. striker Agyemang has been ruled out of the World Cup because of an injury

U.S. striker Patrick Agyemang has sustained an Achilles tendon injury that will prevent him from participating in the World Cup, his English club Derby County announced on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old was injured in the first half of Derby’s 2-0 win over Stoke City in the Championship (second tier) on Monday and was taken off on a stretcher.

“The club will ensure that Patrick receives the utmost medical care and rehabilitation during his recovery,” the club stated. “Due to this injury, Patrick will regrettably miss this summer’s FIFA World Cup.” At this point, it would be inappropriate to establish a timeline for his recovery.

Agyemang has netted six goals in 14 international appearances since his U.S. debut last year. He participated in both of the team’s friendly matches during the March international window.

U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino is required to finalize his World Cup squad by May 30. The U.S., co-hosting the tournament alongside Canada and Mexico, will compete against Paraguay, Australia, and Turkey in Group D.

The World Cup commences on June 11.
