PSV clinches the title in the Netherlands as Feyenoord falls short in their match

PSV Eindhoven secured their third consecutive Dutch championship title on Sunday as their closest rivals, Feyenoord, were unable to achieve victory at Volendam.

The goalless draw positioned PSV, who had triumphed 4-3 at home against Utrecht on Saturday, with a commanding lead as they approach the final five matches of this season’s Eredivisie.

On Saturday, PSV reached 71 points from 29 games, putting pressure on Feyenoord, who needed a win to maintain their slim chances. However, the draw against Volendam resulted in Feyenoord ending up with 54 points, leaving them 17 points behind.

PSV’s victory ignited instant celebrations in the streets of Eindhoven, where fans had been eagerly anticipating Feyenoord’s inability to secure a win.

Saturday’s victory nearly guaranteed them the title, thanks to a significantly better goal difference of +42 for PSV compared to Feyenoord’s +21. However, it was Sunday’s draw for Feyenoord that ultimately confirmed PSV’s triumph.

PSV has achieved the remarkable feat of winning three championships consecutively for the third time in the club’s history. They secured four consecutive victories from 1986 to 1989 and repeated the feat with another four in a row from 2005 to 2008, bringing their total to 27 league titles, surpassed only by Ajax Amsterdam’s impressive count of 36.

PSV is set to participate in the Champions League group phase for the fourth consecutive season next year. The runners-up will also advance to the group phase for 2026-27, while the third-place finishers will enter the third qualifying round.

Feyenoord sits just one point ahead of the unexpected contender NEC Nijmegen, while Twente has climbed to fourth place following their 2-1 victory over Ajax away on Saturday.

On Tuesday, PSV will receive the trophy during a ceremony at Philips Stadion. A shadow over their celebrations is the cruciate ligament injury suffered by captain Jerdy Schouten against FC Utrecht, resulting in the 29-year-old midfielder missing the World Cup in June.
