Arteta accepts accountability as Southampton shocks Arsenal in FA Cup quarter-finals
Arsenal faced a surprising defeat, losing 2-1 to a determined Southampton team in their FA Cup quarterfinal at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday night.
The Gunners created two early opportunities through Max Dowman and Gabriel Martinelli, with the latter’s attempt expertly denied by Taylor Harwood-Bellis. However, Southampton remained undaunted. Loo Scienza sprinted towards Kepa Arrizabalaga in a one-on-one situation, but was effectively guided away from the goal by Cristhian Mosquera.
After the match, a visibly frustrated Artera addressed the press, accepting full responsibility for the unexpected defeat.
“I have great admiration for my players and all they have accomplished over the past nine months,” he reflected.I won’t fault them for their loss here. What they are enduring, some didn’t need to be present today. I will stand by them more resolutely than before.
“If anyone needs to take responsibility, it’s me.” The most beautiful period lies ahead of us. Typically, there are two or three instances like this in a season; this marks the first moment of significant difficulty. Let us rise and ensure our voices are heard.
“There are no justifications regarding absent players or those present with concerns.” Let us examine ourselves in the mirror, acknowledge the circumstances, resist them, and move ahead with purpose.
Southampton goalkeeper Daniel Peretz was summoned to make a save, deflecting Martin Odegaard’s shot. He had another opportunity moments later, firing a close-range shot over the bar, much to Arteta’s frustration.
He would have felt significantly worse when Ross Stewart put the Saints in front with a precise finish following a rapid counterattack, as James Bree’s ball arched over Ben White, enabling the Scotsman to score past Kepa in the 35th minute.
