Sudan has appointed Yassir al-Atta to the armed forces’ Chief of Staff

A military spokesman informed Reuters on Thursday that Sudan has appointed General Yassir al-Atta, who is a member of the country’s Sovereign Council and serves as an assistant to the commander-in-chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the chief of staff of the Armed Forces.

The recent move marks the most notable personnel change since the Sudanese army’s conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces three years prior, potentially resulting in strategic adjustments as a new front emerges in the southeastern Blue Nile state war.

Al-Atta, with over 40 years of military service, has often criticized the United Arab Emirates in public speeches, alleging that the Gulf state supports the RSF, along with civilian politicians he claims have backed the paramilitary group. The UAE and the politicians refute any support for the RSF.

Al-Atta assumes the position of chief of staff from seasoned military officer Othman al-Hussein, resulting in a diminished political role for al-Hussein but granting Al-Atta greater authority over the armed forces.
