Italy faces a crisis as the federation leadership resigns
Italian football is undergoing a significant institutional transformation after the national team’s inability to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup. Amid significant pressure, Gabriele Gravina has officially stepped down from his role as president of the Italian Football Federation, a position he had occupied since 2017.
His departure follows significant criticism, especially in light of his contentious comments after the loss to Bosnia. A successor’s election has been set for June 22 in Rome.
Gravina announced his resignation in a significant meeting with key figures of Italian football, including representatives from Serie A, Serie B, and various governing bodies. In his concluding remarks, he upheld his stance while recognizing the necessity for transformation, particularly in addressing the challenges faced by Italian football and the need for innovative strategies to improve its overall governance. He also confirmed that he would appear before a parliamentary committee to present a comprehensive report on the state of Italian football, emphasizing both its strengths and its structural weaknesses.
Buffon departs with a heartfelt farewell
The crisis escalated rapidly following the resignation of Gianluigi Buffon, who had held the position of head of delegation since 2023. The renowned goalkeeper announced his decision in a heartfelt message, stating that his resignation was “an act of responsibility” following the team’s inability to reach its primary goal: bringing Italy back to the World Cup.
Buffon conveyed a sense of pride in the efforts made behind the scenes, especially in enhancing team cohesion and establishing a long-term vision for the development of Italian football.
Nevertheless, he acknowledged that the inability to qualify eclipsed those endeavors. “It is both an honor and a passion to represent the national team, something I have cherished since childhood,” he expressed, finishing with a sincere message of gratitude and encouragement: “Forza Azzurri sempre.”
