Morocco’s stars issue an apology following the Senegal “like” controversy

The relationship between Morocco and Senegal has shifted recently due to a social media incident involving multiple Moroccan players. During the international break, Ismael Saibari, Eliesse Ben Seghir, and Oussama Targhalline, along with their teammates, caused a stir by liking Instagram posts that depicted Senegalese players in celebration.

The response from Moroccan fans was swift, featuring significant online criticism and audible boos during the Morocco-Paraguay match.

The players promptly released public apologies in response to the backlash. “I would like to express my apologies for the events that occurred…” I accidentally liked a post without even noticing. “It does not lessen my love and commitment to Morocco,” stated Saibari. Targhalline acknowledged his error, saying, “I wasn’t paying attention… I understand the anger, and I apologize.” Ben Seghir conveyed a similar sentiment, stating it was an instinctive gesture toward someone familiar, adding: “I am first and foremost Moroccan…” I have a profound affection for my country, and I take immense pride in representing it.

The players are now eager to move beyond the incident and restore the trust of their supporters on the field by demonstrating their commitment through improved performance and teamwork in upcoming matches.
