Rwanda is prepared to assist South Sudan in its efforts for post-conflict reconstruction, according to the Prime Minister
Prime Minister Justin Nsengiyumva has reiterated Rwanda’s commitment to assisting South Sudan’s peace process by offering its expertise in reconciliation and post-conflict reconstruction.
He made this statement while representing President Paul Kagame at the African Union Ad-Hoc Committee on South Sudan (C5) meeting held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Sunday, February 15.
“Rwanda is prepared to share its experience in reconciliation and post-conflict rebuilding, and to continue supporting peace efforts alongside the United Nations Mission in South Sudan,” the Prime Minister stated during the meeting held on the sidelines of the African Unity Summit.
He emphasized that the AU and its Committee are dedicated to executing the 2018 Revitalised Agreement to attain enduring peace in South Sudan.
Nsengiyumva praised the C5 Ministerial Committee for their visit to Juba in January.
“The results of that visit are essential for the ongoing execution of the Agreement and for the preparations leading up to the upcoming elections set for December this year.”
As South Sudan nears the conclusion of its transition period, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of ongoing support from the continent through established AU mechanisms, such as the Commission, the Office of the Special Representative of the Chairperson, and the Ad Hoc Committee.
He praised the President of South Sudan, Salva Kiir, for the advancements achieved since the previous Summit, especially in “preserving peace and advancing preparations for elections.”
“He emphasized that maintaining political will and enhancing trust among all parties will be essential for solidifying these achievements.”
Nsengiyumva urged the AU Commission, the C5 Committee, and member states to reaffirm their commitments and support South Sudan in achieving lasting peace.
