Obama Criticizes Erosion of Decorum Following Controversial Video Posted by Trump

Former president Barack Obama criticizes “clown show” politics following the release of an offensive clip on Trump’s social media that has ignited bipartisan outrage.

Former US President Barack Obama has expressed his disapproval of the current state of political discourse following President Donald Trump’s sharing of an offensive video that portrays him and former First Lady Michelle Obama as apes.

An inappropriate clip, accompanied by the song The Lion Sleeps Tonight, was featured at the conclusion of a video shared on Trump’s Truth Social account, which included baseless allegations regarding voter fraud in the 2020 election. The post sparked widespread condemnation from Democrats and Republicans.

The White House initially supported the video, characterizing the backlash as “fake outrage.” The post was subsequently removed and attributed to a staff member’s actions.

Obama discussed the matter in a 47-minute podcast interview with liberal host Brian Tyler Cohen, which was released on Saturday. Cohen brought up the post while questioning the former president regarding the tone of political discourse in the US, pointing out that “just days ago, Donald Trump shared an image of you, your face, on the body of an ape.”

In a statement that did not directly reference Trump, Obama remarked: “It’s important to acknowledge that the majority of the American people find this behaviour deeply troubling.”

“It is indeed noteworthy.” Indeed, it serves as a distraction.

He remarked that political debate in the US “has descended to a level of cruelty that we haven’t witnessed before.”

In his reflections on his journeys throughout the nation, Obama noted that he consistently encounters Americans who “still believe in decency, courtesy, kindness.”

“There’s a kind of circus unfolding on social media and television,” he continued.

“What is evident is that there appears to be a lack of shame regarding this among individuals who once believed in maintaining a certain decorum, a sense of propriety, and respect for the office, correct?”

“That has been lost.”

The video faced significant backlash from members of Trump’s own Republican party. Senator Tim Scott, the sole Black Republican senator, characterized it as “the most racist thing I’ve seen out of this White House.”

The clip reflects enduring racist stereotypes that liken Black individuals to monkeys. The origin seemed to trace back to an X post shared by the conservative meme creator Xerias in October.

Trump informed reporters that he “didn’t see” the segment of the video featuring the Obamas.

“I didn’t make a mistake,” he stated when questioned about the possibility of an apology.

In the podcast, Obama addressed topics such as immigration enforcement, electoral redistricting, and his presidential library, which is set to open in Chicago next year.
