Stephen A. Smith Considers 2028 Run: Why the ESPN Personality is “Not Dismissing” a Presidential Campaign
The host of First Take asserts that he has “zero” interest in pursuing a political career, yet expresses a desire to confront the elite in Washington, D.C.
The shift from celebrity to Commander-in-Chief has become a tangible reality in American politics, and ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith could be the next in line.
During a recent interview with CBS Sunday Morning, the “First Take” icon discussed the increasing speculation surrounding a potential presidential run in 2028. Although he was quick to assert that he isn’t seeking a career change, he made it evident that he is considering his options for the upcoming election cycle.
Despite the headlines, Smith maintains that his motivation is not driven by a personal desire for power. “When someone mentions the idea of me being a president or anything similar, I have absolutely no desire to enter the political arena, none at all. … “I have no desire to run for office,” Smith stated to CBS reporter Robert Costa. Nonetheless, he acknowledged that the allure is found in the challenge. “I would welcome the opportunity to stand on the debate stages alongside those who believe they are more qualified to lead the nation.” I believe the American people deserve to hear from someone who truly cares about improving their lives rather than focusing on personal interests.
Smith’s platform defies conventional categorization, although he mentioned that he would probably pursue the Democratic nomination. He characterized his ideology as a blend of both perspectives, stating that he could not envision himself aligning with the GOP. “I adhere to fiscal conservatism.” “I find high taxes intolerable, yet I also identify as a social liberal, as I firmly believe in the principle of live and let live,” Smith expressed. He also addressed contentious topics such as immigration, asserting, “Yes, I like strong borders.” That is indeed correct. We have never required open borders, but a complete closure is also unnecessary. We are a beautiful mosaic.
The experienced analyst is taking his time with the decision, indicating that he intends to utilize 2026 as a “study year” to thoroughly explore the issues. Following the interview, Costa remarked that his time with Smith brought back memories of early 2013-2014, a period when the notion of non-politicians entering the political arena was met with laughter by many. It remains uncertain whether Smith will exchange the sports desk for a campaign bus, but his attention is evidently directed towards the “desolate and disenfranchised” individuals who feel overlooked by the existing establishment.
