Elon Musk unveils his vision for constructing a city on the Moon

Elon Musk announced on Monday, February 9 that SpaceX, his company, intends to construct a “self-growing city” on the Moon.

Musk, whose space company has been investigating Mars, stated that the new project could be completed in under 10 years — half the time it might require to establish a city on Mars.

“For those who may not know, SpaceX has redirected its efforts towards constructing a self-sustaining city on the Moon, as we could potentially accomplish this in under 10 years, while Mars would require over 20 years,” Musk stated on X.

He emphasized that his ambition to settle humans on Mars remains, with a goal for progress within five to seven years.

“The primary focus is ensuring the future of civilization, and the Moon offers a quicker path,” Musk stated.

Recently, the Wall Street Journal reported that SpaceX informed investors of its intention to prioritize a mission to the Moon before planning a trip to Mars at a later date.

On February 6, the US space agency NASA announced that its “SpaceX Crew-12 mission is scheduled to launch no earlier than Wednesday, Feb. 11, sending four new crew members to further the frontiers of scientific discovery aboard the International Space Station.”

SpaceX aims to land on the Moon in March 2027.
