Egypt announces the results of the most recent parliamentary poll, which gave Sisi a significant majority
President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi received the super-majority he needs to change the constitution on Saturday after the National Elections Authority of Egypt announced the results of the final 49 seats in a parliamentary election that started more than three months ago.
Reruns of voting in constituencies where the first results had been declared invalid had delayed the results of the final seats.
The results are not expected to change the general makeup of parliament, which will be dominated by Sisi’s loyalists, despite the Elections Authority not disclosing the party affiliations of the elected candidates.
Egypt’s State Information Service reported last week that independents and opposition parties were expected to hold 158 of the 568 elected seats, or roughly 28%. An additional 5% of seats are appointed by the president, increasing the total to 596. To change the constitution, a two-thirds majority is required.
